I can’t tell you how many times this has happened.
We get a call from a hospital or apartment complex that’s coping with a bat infestation. They’ve already waited quite a while to ask for help—most likely, they’ve had an in-house maintenance employee try to take care of it since they first noticed there were bats in the building.
At some point, they realize that this isn’t working, as more and more bats are seen and the stench increases. That’s when they seek help from professional bat exclusion experts like us at Get Bats Out. We give them a bid, and then they balk at what seems like too high of a price, turn us down, and go back to what they were doing.
While the price is a big part of why they decline our services, the managers of these places also consistently underestimate the magnitude of a bat infestation, and how much worse it can get if they don’t take real action!
Time Goes By
After turning us down, they continue to deal with the bat infestation. Inevitably—a month later, a season later, a year later—they come back and hire us to take care of a problem that’s dramatically worse and much more expensive!
Why did it get worse? Because the bat colony keeps growing as the bats reproduce, and the more bats there are, the more guano they produce. It’s only a matter of time before the combination of too many bats and too much guano makes conditions unworkable and unlivable.
One such hospital dealt with bats for a couple years. An in-house maintenance man was designated as “bat man” and he would regularly try to clean up guano and even remove bats from inside the hospital at times. Unfortunately, this management of the visible problem didn’t address the underlying (and growing) problem.
Sadly, the bat infestation got so bad that they actually had to evacuate and shut down the hospital. We got the call to fix it, and we had to work on it 24/7 and participate in negotiations to get the institution reopened.
The moral of the story is: Nip these infestations in the bud! As painful as the price might be now, it’s going to be a lot better than it’ll be if you let the problem grow.
