Name: Augustus (Gus) Swyers

Position: Virginia and North Carolina Get Bats Out Technician

Virginia Get Bats Out TechnicianHow long have you been working for Get Bats Out? 3 seasons

Where are you based and what areas do you serve?   Martinsville, Virginia. I serve Virginia and North Carolina but have done bat jobs on the West Coast, South Carolina, Maryland, Georgia, and Florida.

Tell us your favorite on-the-job bat removal story.

Brian Conn and l were working on an old Colonial style two-story home in Blackstone, VA that had working 60″x30″ window shutters on the front of the house. By the piles of guano underneath, we knew several bats had taken up residence there.

The hinges had been painted shut over the years so we couldn’t just open them, thus exposing the bats to sunlight which would generally make them fly away.

I need a beer

So Brian gets on the 60′ lift with a water hose, gets close to the top of one of the second story windows and directs the water behind the shutter. I’m on the ground shooting video while hundreds of bats start pouring out from behind that set of shutters. It was enough to make even the bravest bat specialist shudder. (Couldn’t help that one.)

That evening we went to a Mexican place for dinner. They must have known what we went through. We both ordered a beer with dinner expecting a 12oz bottle but were served ice cold 32oz bottles. Unexpected but funny!

What are your favorite things to do where you live? Find excuses not to work in the yard, read, go out to eat, cook, volunteering, and playing video games.

What is your first memory at Get Bats Out? My buddy (Brian Conn) first asked me if I’d be interested in learning about bat exclusion during a telephone conversation. I laughed, said I’d think about it and when l hung up l thought out loud, “That was the craziest thing he’s ever said to me!” A few months later l was on my first job!

What is your favorite thing about your job? I love providing peace of mind to homeowners by taking care of the very real threat posed by a bat infestation. Your home should be the place where you feel most secure. Helping to restore that feeling is priceless.

Are you active in any local clubs or organizations? I’m involved on the administrative end of an organization that coordinates volunteers to build and repair places of worship of Jehovah’s Witnesses. We also provide disaster relief for both places of worship and private homes in affected areas.

Where is your favorite place to eat?

Any place new. Seriously. My better half and l are very gastronomically adventurous.

Who would play you in a movie?

George Clooney? Brad Pitt? Jason Statham…he’d have to bulk up though.

You’re hosting a dinner party – what are you making for dinner?

Reservations…or Camarones al Mojo de Ajo (a garlic and shrimp dish), spinach and red onion salad, French bread, and a Spanish white wine. You can surprise us with dessert.

What is your personal motto?

“You talkin’ to me?”

What are the Top 3 highlights of your life? Baptism, Wedding, and the day in the near future when Publishers Clearing House comes knocking!

What is your biggest fear? Winged Rats.

When you were 6 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A ninja.

What would be the title of your autobiography?

Kung Fu Prodigy To Middle-Aged Slacker in Four Easy Steps (Decades)

What is your favorite book?

My most read book is the Bible. My favorite non-religious book would have to be – To Kill a Mockingbird (No…not the fourth installment of the Hunger Games series)

Thanks for sharing with us Gus! We appreciate having you on the team!
