Position: Maryland Get Bats Out Technician
How long have you been working for Get Bats Out? Michael and I started the Maryland branch of Get Bats Out in 2006. This will be my 8th season, and I have successfully accomplished hundreds of exclusions.
Where are you based and what areas do you serve? I am based out of beautiful Ocean City, Maryland, and I service the entire Delmarva Peninsula (Delaware, Maryland and Virginia). From time to time, I will go to New Jersey and North Carolina and farther when needed for a commercial job.
Tell us your favorite on-the-job bat removal story.
Every bat job is an adventure! I have found there are four stages to bat work.
- Terror – scared to death of the bats
- Anger – Why are the bats so hard to get out? Do I really have to clean up the guano?
- Respect – Bats can live for forty or more years and are incredibly well organized. They can show incredible persistence and love for their babies.
- Love – Pick up the bat and cradle and love it. I have not made it yet to number four… few have…
My favorite stories usually have to do with one of us getting startled by a bat or even an imagined bat and screaming like little girls. One time I had a couple of flying squirrels run out and jump off my chest which gave the guys I was working with a big laugh as I let out a terrible scream!
What are your favorite things to do where you live? Spend time with my family, bonfires on the beach, golfing, and tennis
What is your first memory at Get Bats Out? Around February of 2006, I had a bat in my garage and called Michael to ask what to do. He paused and said, “You know, if you have a bat in your garage in winter we need to get a business going out there!” I said, “Ok!” Within a month we had our first large commercial project and we had an outstanding first year in the DC area.
What is your favorite thing about your job? Seeing the relief people feel when you can tell them their home is “bat free.” On commercial projects I especially enjoy working with Michael, who is my best friend, and the other guys who are likewise long-time friends and wonderful guys to associate with.
Before working for Get Bats Out, what is the most unusual job you’ve ever had? Honestly nothing compares in the unusual category to Bat work. One of my old school friends contacted me and said, “Seriously? You grew up to be Batman???”
Are you active in any local clubs or organizations? We are members of Bat Conservation International, a group dedicated to the preservation of bats and bat colonies. They are very hard workers. When you hear of the horrible killing of thousands of bats by wildlife exterminators it really makes you appreciate organizations like this one, in partnership with a company like ours that safely and humanely excludes bats.
Where is your favorite place to eat? Home is always first, but a good Italian restaurant is always nice.
Where would you go on a dream vacation? We went to Costa Rica a couple of years ago on a bat job and I would love to go back!
What is your personal motto? “We are here now, let’s do it right.”
What are the Top 3 highlights of your life? The first two would have to do with dating and marrying my wife. The third would be holding my daughter for the first time.
If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see? Likely something related to the Civil War, that’s always interested me.
What is your favorite movie? Forrest Gump
Favorite Book? The Bible and Atlas Shrugged
If you’re in Maryland and have a bat problem, Brian is the one to help you. After hundreds of successful exclusions, you are going to be in good hands!
