At Get Bats Out, we got our start as a Colorado bat removal company. We have expanded and grown rapidly over the the last few years. We thought this might be a good time to introduce you to the genius behind our company.
Name: Michael Koski
How long have you been working for Get Bats Out?
We formed the current business structure in July of 2007, though I had been working in my father’s Colorado bat removal business for approximately 10 years prior to that.
Where are you based and what areas do you serve?
My family and I live in Carbondale, CO and that is where we’ve set up our customer service office. Our business has expanded rapidly as we find and train new technicians in different parts of the country. In 2007, we started with bat removal services in New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. In 2015 we provided services in 43 states and in DC. We’ve done projects in Costa Rica, and bid work in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Tell us your favorite on-the-job bat removal story.
There have been some terrifying moments, such as being perched on a beam trying to install hardware cloth over an attic vent with a couple hundred bats flying above, below, and around me. My helper stood below screaming and waving the flashlight around the whole time. And there have been disgusting moments in some knee deep guano. Or the time I startled a bat by putting my head under an eave – and it peed on my face! But my favorite times are when I travel to a large commercial bat removal jobs to get bats out of a hospital, school, or other large building and I get to work for a week or so with my friends. We work hard, we laugh hard, and we try to eat well. I also enjoy solving real problems; making people feel safe, helping businesses or institutions stay open (or reopen after a serious bat problem), and protecting peoples property.
You’re hosting a dinner party – what are you making?
My wife Tammy is the best cook/chef I know. I generally get to pour the wine, grill the steaks and do the dishes.
What is your favorite thing about the job?
Getting to pick who I work with and which clients I will serve are definitely the highlights. I love our team. The business started as an excuse for some good friends to work together a few times a year. As it has grown, we’ve been careful to hire people we like. Secondary benefits have included travel to places I never would have seen, challenging work, and getting to play the role of batman.
Before working for Get Bats Out, what is the most unusual job you’ve ever had?
I worked for seven years as a volunteer in Brooklyn, NY purchasing used office furniture for the world headquarters and branch offices of Jehovah’s Witnesses. I’ve also sold fine art in Aspen, CO and started an Antique Mall in Peoria, Illinois. Perhaps the strangest experience was starting and managing a small private hedge fund to trade equity options – that ended very badly.
Where would you go on a dream vacation?
I am writing this from a Colorado bat removal business in the middle of winter, so any tropical island sounds great! My children love the ocean & I love taking a break from winter.
Who would play you in a movie?
Superman – as long as Batman doesn’t get offended.
What are three things most people don’t know about you?
- I like to juggle and have performed with flaming torches.
- I love children – I come from a family of seven boys and am grateful to have four children of my own.
- I was born in Iowa, have lived in a small town in Colorado, spent two year in a city in the Midwest (Peoria, IL) and lived for 7 years in Brooklyn Heights.
What is your personal motto?
“Attitude is a choice”
And as a runner up – “We choose our habits, and our habits determine our future”
Pick one: Invisibility or Flight; and why?
Definitely flight. I love looking at situations from a new perspective. Think of the time it would save on bat jobs? Besides, if bats can fly – why shouldn’t I?
When you were 6 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Just like my dad – a husband, father, and business owner.
What is your hidden talent?
My secret weapon isn’t a talent. It is the incredible network of talented, positive and creative family members, friends and coworkers we have at our Colorado bat removal company.
Thank you Michael, for giving us a small peek into the driving force behind our Colorado bat removal business. And we disagree with you, we think we are the lucky ones to work with a leader such as you.
